  2. Hi Geoff

How about Windmill hill c. 3500 bc

  3. 'Hill' I like, but only on topographical grounds, and 'Windmill' is very much an anachronism.
Nor is it belong to a Neolithic, it's far more of a Marxist culture.

  4. How about Windmill hill c. 3500 bc please explain

  5. 'Windmill Hill Culture' is a term once used for a phase of the Neolithic in England.

While the site is a hill it is not Neolithic, but pre-dates the use of Windmills in the area.

The rest of the comment is a cryptic clue to the cultural phase of this site.

It will time for more clues soon, as usual I am surprised nobody has got it yet [. . come on Heather!]

  9. ome on everyone, this is getting embarrassing!

    Lets review the evidence.

It is a hill fort, with circular buildings, and is slightly urban in nature.
Some of the defences are stone built.
The vegetation is slightly scrubby, and the area looks a bit dry, but not too arid.
It has a good tarmac road, car park and modern structures on the summit.

I am a specialist in European prehistory, and I took the plan from a well known text.

So you are looking for a hill fort with round buildings and stone built defences, in one of the dryer areas of Europe, which is of a tourist attraction locally, of some international interest.

    So the answer is . . .

  10. Got it!
Citânia de Briteiros in north Portugal. Castro Culture; late Bronze/Iron Age.

  11. Brilliant! Well done Lee, it is indeed Citânia de Briteiros, an Iron Age Oppidum in Portugal, with BA and medieval phases.

So it's over to you, I look forward to WOGE 93.

  12. Finally! I never have a hope of identifying the sites, but I get frustrated no end when you professionals cannot come up with the answer. Thanks for the identification, and off to search what info I can find on the site. Looking forward to being frustrated with Lee's choice of site.

  13. I think if you had had a guess at 'Castro' culture from my clues about Cuba/Marxism you would be halfway there.

From the form of the site, and this is were a good general archaeological knowledge comes in, you can discern the type/period.

Most of us post well known sites, -the trick is to work out the country/part of the world.

Knowing your way round the internet helps, as does a little persistence; I rarely know the actual site instantly.
