As a rule you don't invite people who will disagree with you to a conference.
Nice thought, thanks,
GGeoff Carterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01111820035762957610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2357316514436369105.post-33075201361992492092015-10-19T15:47:29.195+01:002015-10-19T15:47:29.195+01:00Geoff

Clearly, in a monopoly, religion can claim credit for any advance, as all but the most foolhardy were adherents. One of the ideas I was playing with is that a [monotheistic] widespread official religion is inherently conservative and has no vested interest in change.
[There is a story that] During the siege of Colchester in 1648, a Parliamentary gunner was executed because his shooting was thought too accurate and thus the work of the devil; I tell this because it is quite impossible to measure the effect of religion in society, positive or negative, counterfactual history is just that, counterfactual.
I think the key point about rationality V religion, is that while religion has always claimed rationality, which is why included Descartes, it is a rational that tends to presume the existence and nature of god.
I don’t trust Wikipedia either, but it is good enough for a meta-parable. ....yours in haste, G.
Geoff Carterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01111820035762957610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2357316514436369105.post-10955966579415838032015-10-16T05:18:27.636+01:002015-10-16T05:18:27.636+01:00I find this lecture "by an Englishman" u...I find this lecture "by an Englishman" useful
http://www.bogoslov.ru/en/text/2848106.html

heaven knows how it got onto this site as the man lives in Manchester!!

M Ehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266082523798780815noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2357316514436369105.post-74230156716722001152015-10-16T05:11:45.564+01:002015-10-16T05:11:45.564+01:00Not criticising!

Besides, if you send someone a letter on official letterhead telling them their work is worthless, you should have read it first, or so you might imagine in the world where Conquest's Third Law did not apply.
What I coming up is far less entertaining, I have to do the "science bit" it is not even mildly amusing, it has to be done, but nobody will read it!
Geoff Carterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01111820035762957610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2357316514436369105.post-75283633765567534072015-10-01T19:00:18.836+01:002015-10-01T19:00:18.836+01:00Here's some support for your complaint against...Here's some support for your complaint against universities, although from an opposite point of view.
Conquest's Third Law

I'm glad that you've keeping entertainingly busy and not letting them grind you down.Odin's Ravenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10138497698247404499noreply@blogger.com
